There is plenty to do in and around Mangawhai such
as surfing, fishing, swimming, boating, walking or just go for a stroll
around cafés. Feel free to have a wander around our farm -
you will find lots of native flora and fauna. There are pheasants,
morepork, fantails, kingfishers and tuis.
Beaches
The surf beach is patrolled all summer so please check out their flags
and advice. The estuary provides safe swimming but do watch when the
tide is going out. Take a trip to Te Arai beaches or the nearby freshwater
lakes. All beaches are magnificent long white
and often isolated. Surfies and fishermen with the kite lines enjoy
this place. Only the forest comes down to the waters edge. Langs
beach is close by and is a beautiful north facing beach.
Art
Mangawhai has an interesting art community which is worth checking
out. Of note is the Smashed Pipi gallery. It specialises in craft
art including pottery and glass but there is some art and great wall
hangings. The gallery is also the local outlet for our famous Bennetts
Chocolates. Ask any chocolatier and they will have heard of Bennetts
of Mangawhai.
Mangawhai
Mangawhai sits on the East Coast of Northland just 80 minutes north
of the Auckland Harbour bridge on the twin Coast Discovery Route.
Take State Highway 1 and 7kms north of Wellsford is the turn off to
Mangawhai. From the North, enter the Mangawhai Road at Waipu or if
driving from the Waipoua Kauri Forest arrive at Mangawhai using the
road coming off State Highway 1 at Kaiwaka.
